APICS Michiana Presents - Inventory Transactions in a JIT Environment
|
Date: Tuesday, February 08, 2000
Joint Meeting with IMA
Debra Smith, CFPIM, CIRM
|
| Last month we talked about the waste created from excessive supplier lead times
- times that creep beyond our planning horiz can be brought under control. This month we will hear about what is really necessary to be recorded to give us the needed visibility to our inventory (and control) without adding waste in that tracking process.
The JIT philosophy demands that we seek out and eliminate waste. When we recognize excess inventory as waste, then we must reduce inventory to a minimum and make sure that the inventory we do have is moving. In this process, it is reasonable to expect that we will incur a higher number of inventory transactions, each transaction representing fewer parts. But, is the task of processing more transactions (creating, entering, verifying, tracking) really an inevitable side effect of reaping the proven benefits of JIT? Or are we too limited in our approaches to JIT to realize its full advantage?
Our speaker invites us to look at inventory transactions |
