Supply Chain Risk Management

In today‘s Global Economy, the response to Supply Chain Risk is “reactive”.  Traditional, “Cost Down” Procurement efforts often amplify and expedite Supply Chain Risk (e.g. moving contracts from a troubled supplier, delaying supplier payments, Competitive Bidding, etc.).  Existing Supply Chain Risk Management evaluation tools and techniques utilize “lagging” financial indicators (e.g. Sales, Cost Trends, Profit Margin, Sales Growth, etc.)

The identification and qualification of Risk is essential in the migration from reactive to predictive Risk Management.  Supply Chain Risk evaluation tools should qualify Risks against specific Failure Modes.

This presentation will discuss how Risk Management efforts should focus on:
  • Identification of Supply Chain Failure Modes
  • Comparative likelihood of occurrence of Failure
  • Current measurement methods and controls



    • Michael Vitek / Dr Sime Curkovic are presenting on the results of a research project about the potential use of formal systems for managing risks in SCM conducted behalf of WMU and Mercedez-Benz Technology (MBtech) North America.

    Michael Vitek is the Vice President of the North American Practice of Mercedes-Benz Technology Consulting. Mr. Vitek is a graduate of General Motors Institute with a degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. He began his career in 1992 as a System Engineer with Lucas Engineering & Systems focusing on Post Merger Integration activities, including Operational Consolidation and Reduction in Force planning and execution. In 1994, Mr. Vitek joined Sandalwood Enterprises focusing on advanced product & manufacturing programs, including research and development for several OEM electric and fuel cell vehicle programs. In 2000, Mr. Vitek joined the North Highland Company leading the organization’s regional Supply Chain Management and Retail CRM activities. In 2003, Mr. Vitek formed The Vitek Group, a firm focused on the development of Open Source applications for the automotive and retail sectors. And Mr. Vitek joined Mercedes-Benz Technology North America in 2005 as the Director of their North American Consulting Practice. In July of 2008, he was promoted to Vice President, responsible for the firm’s Strategy, Operations, and Process Consulting, as well as Program and Project Management Services.

    Dr. Sime Curkovic is a Professor of Supply Chain Management at Western Michigan University receiving his undergraduate degree in Management Systems from Kettering University and his Ph.D. degree from Michigan State University. Dr. Curkovic has taught several courses in sourcing, operations, logistics, process, environmental, and multinational management. His research interests include environmentally responsible manufacturing, green purchasing, total quality management, supply chain management, and integrated global strategic sourcing. Dr. Curkovic's publications have appeared in the Journal of Supply Chain Management, the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, the Decision Sciences Journal, the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, the International Journal of Production Research, the Journal of Quality Management, the Journal of Operations Management, and the International Journal of Production Economics. His professional memberships include ASQ, APICS, DSI, INFORMS, ISM, and POMS. Dr. Curkovic's previous work experiences were with General Motors in the midwest, Mexico, and Germany. His dissertation on the relationship between Total Quality Management and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing has been given the following awards: 1) The APICS Educational Foundation Edward & Marion Plossl Fellowship; 2) The Richard J. Lewis Quality of Excellence Award; and 3) The National Decision Sciences Institute Buffa Doctoral Dissertation. Dr. Curkovic’s previous research and consulting experiences have been with: Denso, Asmo, Dana, Lear, JCI, Steelcase, Benteler, Kellogg, Stryker, Eaton, Whirlpool, GM, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Harley-Davidson, John Deere, Rolls Royce, Borg Warner, Bosch, Honda, Tektronics, and Cargill.
