This presentation will focus on practical ideas for implementing lean thinking on the shop floor. A proven approach to accomplishing changes will be presented using an actual work cell redesign kaizen event as an example. The steps in the approach will be presented in the sequence necessary to identify the selection of the appropriate lean tools to ensure successful long term measured project results. The detailed cell process move plan will be presented and discussed using the basic steps of 5s kaizen events.
Attendees should take away the following:
- Practical ideas to apply in their lean implementation projects
- A stepped approach to identify and accomplish the changes needed to affect the expected project results
- Lean team ground rules, operating procedures, and roles and responsibilities
- Work plan example for the work cell implementation
- Example of a 5s checklist for the work cell implementation
- Current and future state maps of the product flow
- List of the characteristics of a lean process
- Team checklists to help identify wastes in a process
Three up handouts of the presentation and a packet of project forms used at the client as they worked through the project will be provided to the attendees of this event.

Bob Montgomery CPIM CSCP is an associate of Peak Enterprise Solutions. Bob is currently a principal with Manufacturing Management Associates, Inc., a manufacturing management consulting firm. As a consultant for over 25 years, he has assisted numerous clients in many different industries and has been involved in Business Systems Implementation, Performance Improvement, Process Innovation, and Strategic Business Planning.
Prior to consulting, Bob worked in manufacturing for 18 years where he was involved in manufacturing, materials, and executive positions in both large multi-plant corporations and small companies. He held the positions of Production Inventory Control Manager, Director of Operations, Vice President of Materials, Executive Vice President, and President. He has been involved with The American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), a resource management organization, for over 30 years and has been a member of the Chicago Chapter Board of Directors, President of the Chicago Chapter and Chairman of the National Small Manufacturing Special Interest Group. He was also a recent member of the APICS Education and Research Foundation Board of Directors.
Bob has a degree in Business Management from Northern Illinois University, as well as an MBA from Loyola University, and is certified by the American Production and Inventory Control Society with both the CPIM and CSCP certifications.
